In general, the NDIS funds supports that are directly related to your disability and help you live more independently and confidently. This can include things like:

  • Everyday personal care– support with showering, getting dressed, or preparing meals
  • Transport– to help you get to school, appointments, social groups, or other daily activities
  • Employment support– help to find and keep a job, or build your work skills
  • Therapies– like occupational therapy, speech pathology, or behavioural support
  • Household tasks– support with cleaning, laundry, or anything that helps you stay independent at home
  • Home modifications– changes that make your home safer and more accessible
  • Mobility aids and vehicle modifications– equipment that helps you move around more easily or travel safely

It’s important to remember that the NDIS only funds supports that are considered reasonable and necessary and directly related to your disability. If you’re ever unsure about what’s covered—or want help making sense of it all—feel free to reach out. We are always here to talk things through:

Understanding theNDIS

The NDIS is a government-funded scheme that supports people under the age of 65 who have a permanent disability that significantly affects their daily life. The scheme is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). It focuses on early intervention and personalised support, aiming to help participants achieve greater independence, community involvement, education, employment, and overall quality of life.

Supports funded by the NDIS fall into three main categories:

  • Core supports: Help with everyday activities.
  • Capital supports: For assistive technologies, equipment, or home modifications.
  • Capacity building supports: For skill development, therapy, and participation in education or employment.

Checking Eligibility

  • Be aged under 65 at the time of application.
  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
  • Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities.

If you think you meet the criteria, contact us here at Navigate Your Way.

Accessing the NDIS

Step 1:

You’ll need to complete an Access Request Form and provide supporting documentation about your disability. This includes reports or letters from health professionals that describe your diagnosis, how your disability affects your daily life, and what supports you need.

Step 2:

Once your access is approved, the next step is a planning meeting with an NDIS planner or LAC. This is where you’ll discuss your goals and the types of supports you need. It’s important to prepare by:

  • Bringing medical or therapy reports
  • Listing your goals and aspirations
  • Thinking about daily challenges and the support you require
  • Asking a trusted friend, advocate, or support coordinator to join you

Plans

Creating Your Plan

Your NDIS plan is your personalised document that outlines your goals and the funding allocated to help you achieve them. It typically includes:

Your goals

These might include learning new skills, finding employment, becoming more independent, or joining social groups.

Funded supports

Based on your needs, the NDIA will allocate funding under different support categories.

Plan management option

You’ll choose how your funding is managed. Your plan usually lasts 12 months, though some may be shorter or longer depending on your situation.

Explore the three NDIS plan management options: agency-managed, plan-managed, and self-managed. Learn how each option offers flexibility and support for managing your NDIS funds effectively.

Choosing a Plan Management Option

You can choose how to manage the funds in your plan:
  1. Agency-managed: The NDIA pays providers directly. You can only use registered NDIS providers.
  2. Plan-managed: A third-party plan manager helps you manage funds and handle payments. You can use both registered and unregistered providers.
  3. Self-managed: You manage the budget and pay providers yourself. Offers the most flexibility but requires more administration.

Many participants choose plan management for the balance of flexibility and support.

Finding and Engaging Providers

Once your plan is approved, you can start accessing supports. This is were we can step in to support you and help you find service providers in your area. These might include:
  • Occupational therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Support workers
  • Transport providers
  • Social or recreational services

Make sure to check reviews, compare services, and ask questions. You have the right to switch providers if you’re not happy.

Working Towards Your Goals

Your plan is built around your goals, so use your supports to actively work towards them. You might use capacity building funding for job coaching, speech therapy, or life skills programs. Core funding might support help with daily tasks or accessing your community.

Keep track of progress by:

  • Keeping receipts and invoices
  • Documenting services you use
  • Taking note of improvements or challenges
  • Staying in touch with your LAC or Support Coordinator

Learn about NDIS plan reviews, how to request an internal or external review, and the process of appealing decisions regarding funding or services.

Plan Reviews and Appeals

Your plan is reviewed regularly (usually every 12 months). During a review, you’ll discuss what’s working, what’s not, and whether your goals or needs have changed.

If you’re unhappy with the outcome of your plan or a decision by the NDIA (such as funding allocation), you have the right to request:

  • Internal review: Within 3 months of the decision.
  • External review: Through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT)if needed.

Be clear, thorough, and persistent in advocating for your needs.

What does NDIS pay for?

You can use NDIS funding to pay for supports and services that are:

  • Reasonable – support that is most appropriately funded or provided through the NDIS
  • Necessary – something you need that’s related to your disability.

This covers supports that help you pursue your goals, be more independent, take part in social activities and work, actively participate in your community, and enjoy life. So, this could include:

  • help with personal care activities
  • transport to help you participate in your community
  • help at work to successfully get or keep a job
  • therapeutic supports like occupational therapy, speech therapy and behaviour support
  • aids or equipment to help you do things more independently
  • mobility equipment to help you get about more easily
  • early intervention for eligible people with disability or children with developmental delay
  • work with a support worker
  • a carer or assistive technology
  • home modifications that help in your everyday life.

“As someone new to the NDIS, I initially found it overwhelming and frustrating to connect with the right supports. I tried a couple of Support Coordinators but never felt completely comfortable or supported. That changed when I discovered Navigate Your Way—and I’m so glad I did.

From my very first inquiry Nikki and Andrew responded promptly and professionally. Since then, I’ve relied on their services for a successful Change of Circumstance review and for all my support needs, including transport to allied health appointments, OT assessments, exercise physiology sessions, Dance for Parkinson’s classes, support groups, shopping trips, and countless medical appointments.

Navigate Your Way has become a trusted and essential part of my support network.”
